Ophthalmic System and Pregnancy

Hormonal changes
Pregnancy is a phase of a woman’s life with numerous symptoms where she constantly experiences changes in her body. These changes are due to hormonal shifts that begin in the first trimester itself. Sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and androgen are found to have receptors on the cornea. As a result, the cornea gets subjected to hormone-mediated alterations during times when the hormones fluctuate higher.

Changes in the corneal curvature
There are some studies supporting the changes in the corneal curvature during pregnancy. It has been reported that a significant increase in the corneal curvature was found during the second and third trimester of pregnancy.

Dryness of eyes
A pregnant woman can experience a decrease in the tear production. Dryness of eyes is already a lasik surgery side effect which can turn more adverse during pregnancy as the condition already prevails.

Corneal thickness
During pregnancy, a significant group of women also showed an increase in the central corneal thickness. It was found to be significantly higher in the second and third trimester along with featuring other ocular changes.

Postpartum and Lasik Surgery

After delivering the baby, the above-mentioned parameters should get back to the pre-pregnancy stage. Though it is safe to undergo Lasik after pregnancy, however, it is not recommended to consider it just after pregnancy.

During the lactation phase, it is not evident to what extent these altered corneal parameters will settle. Hence, it is not suggested to go for a lasik surgery during the breastfeeding stage. It is important to allow the refraction to get back to its pre-pregnancy values. Also, lactation in itself brings changes in the body and one must not hamper themselves with undergoing any procedure or treatment.

Takeaway

It is advised to have at least a 6-7 months gap for Lasik eye surgery before or after pregnancy as by this time ocular changes return to normal. Also, for some women it may take up to 1 year to achieve corneal stability. Thus, one must avoid making assumptions themselves and decide their health status for when to have a lasik surgery after pregnancy.

Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
